"A down to earth approach to learning."

Outline OUTLINEHappy Little Girl

KIN is a Montessori-themed, child led, activity-based learning program.

In today’s busy world, full of distractions and entertainments, one study has proposed that kids generally get about as much daily time outdoors as prison inmates. Children need time connect with the Earth; time to watch its seasons blossom and wither. Giving your child the opportunity to be outside EVERYDAY regardless of the weather, is a wonderful gift and a daily adventure.

At KIN, we propose that immersing children into the natural landscape and sharing our love of the great outdoors will help kids to foster a connection to nature that leaves them feeling healthier physically, behaviourally and emotionally.

Please note: your child may come home from a day in our program very TIRED! Bedtimes may be easy on forest school days - Children can't bounce off the walls if you take the walls away!

The evidence that time in nature has a positive effect on children and their development is overwhelming. It is our aim to provide a wealth of opportunities for...Kids In Nature!

Home Learning
KIN’s Home Learning Program involves play-based and place-based instruction, following the children's interests. We study the natural history of our forest through exploration and observation. We observe the changes that occur seasonally and use real tools to build and garden, and we practice survival skills like fire-making, outdoor safety, and shelter-building.

At KIN we also emphasize learning to play and work together cooperatively: we interact with farm animals and learn to take care of them; we field-trip to nearby sites to explore marine life, salmon life cycles, and other habitats. Additionally, we also enjoy making music, telling stories, and creating arts and crafts.

As we are always moving; we are also learning physical fitness. We enjoy climbing, hiking, biking and running around while we play.

Children are outside in most conditions, but we may choose to field-trip, or to stay in the fire shelter or the horse arena if we want to escape challenging weather.

Field Trips FIELD TRIPS

There are LOTS of daily activities on site and in our own forest, however we also regularly visit Hazelmere Pumpkin Patch (our neighbouring farm), and walk to Redwood Park to play on the playground and visit the ‘fairy doors’.

We may occasionally take trips to the beach over the summer months; however, this activity is dependent on parent volunteers.

Parents will be given advance warning of any large field trips.

Preparation PREPARATION

Parents will need to provide for your child: a ‘muddy buddy’ or rain gear with waterproof pants & jacket, rain boots, gloves or mittens, a hat, and a water bottle. Children are also asked to bring a seasonally appropriate change of clothes that remain on site for emergencies (including socks and underwear). These items are required to remain on site for the duration of program attendance so your child can be comfortable in any weather, and always prepared for class.

You may also bring a bike (or anything with wheels) and helmet.
